STARTING: 09:00 (7 hrs) MINIMUM: 5 People (Shared Group)

On the other side of the Basque-Spanish border we find a different environment, less mountainous on the coast, different architecture, traditions and people, although our Basque blood and culture unites us

La cote Basque or the French Basque coast is one of those places where you can enjoy the sea, unique views, see the beginning of the Pyrenees mountain range and enjoy unique coastal villages

In medieval times were ports of corsairs and kings and still maintain that historical essence apart from an interesting gastronomic, commercial and surfing offer

Biarritz, Saint Jean de Luz and Hondarribia will allow you to see three different types of medieval villages in which all will surprise you with their authenticity, history and architecture

Biarritz, Saint Jean de Luz and Hondarribia

Biarritz
Biarritz was visited by kings such as Victoria, Edward VII and Alfonso XIII and continues to be a favourite of many of the aristocracy, becoming known as «the Queen of Resorts and the Resort of Kings».

The town is mostly made up of bourgeois houses and mansions. This touch of luxury is perfectly balanced with the more relaxed and carefree surf culture, which has a long tradition in Biarritz. This interesting contrast is undoubtedly part of the town’s identity.
Saint Jean de Luz
Then we will head to the next French Basque village: Saint Jean de Luz.

This village of corsairs and fishermen still keeps a date in its memory: 9 June 1660. We travel back in time to discover the secrets of this seaside town through the marriage between Louis XIV of France and the Spanish princess Maria Teresa of Austria.

We will stroll along Rue Leon Gambetta enjoying the spectacle of seeing the local shops where you can buy local produce such as canned fish, Espelette peppers, fresh roasted coffee, cheese and Basque style table linen.

We will visit the Saint Jean Baptiste church, the Louis XIV square, the port which in medieval times was the most important port in France and where you can buy the famous macarons in the Maison Adam shop with more than 350 years of history.

Then we will have a light lunch tasting local Basque-French dishes such as mussels, cuttlefish, local charcuterie or Axoa in the square of Louis XIV.
Hondarribia
As a last stop we will visit the town of Hondarribia (Basque Country), one of the most beautiful towns in the Basque Country that we like very much because it has two very interesting parts to visit: the beautiful coast and streets with medieval buildings with cobblestone floors.

We will take a nice walk along the banks of the Bidasoa River with views of France just across the river to the old port and enter the Marina Quarter where the fishermen of Hondarribia lived for centuries in colourful houses.

We will go up Santiago Street, where the pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago used to pass, until we enter the city walls and visit the Plaza de Gipuzkoa, the Plaza de Armas where we will be welcomed by the 12th century castle and palace of Charles V, nowadays a “Parador Nacional” hotel, and the main street with its medieval buildings.

With these views of the city, with a day full of anecdotes we will finish our tour to return to Donostia. A fantastic day where we will have visited three very different and picturesque small towns, being one of our favorite tours. Enjoy!
