Rioja Winery Region After the walk, we will stop at two more sites of cultural and scenic interest to enjoy the panorama and take some photos before heading back.
Leaving San Sebastian, in about 90 minutes we will reach the wine region of La Rioja where we will visit a singular winery and learn about its peculiar history and the winemaking process of its wines. Every visit deserves a good tasting of the winery’s most prestigious wines and it will be a delicious experience, a treat for our palate!
There are approximately 600 wineries in the Rioja wine valley, although the natural landscape is incredibly beautiful. The most characteristic are Tempranillo, Garnacha and Viura, among others you will learn.
To contrast and expand our palette of flavors and tastes, we will visit two other wineries so you can evaluate and decide which one you like most. Each winery has a particular process for winemaking or uses different types of grapes, so each wine is unique and that’s why we go there, to taste different aromas, textures and flavors.

Light Lunch
After spending the morning among the wineries and drinking good wine we will enjoy a light lunch in the area, a tasty traditional menu with 100% local produce.
Laguardia
In the afternoon we will visit the medieval village of Laguardia, named as one of the most beautiful villages in Spain. It is a charming village surrounded by a medieval wall, old churches, narrow empty medieval streets with miles of passages under its feet.
"Calados" - Caves
One of the main attractions of Laguardia is to be able to access the «calados». But what are the «calados»? They are caves that undermine the ground of Laguardia and other medieval villages in this region in the south of the Basque Country, bordering La Rioja, and have traditionally been used to house wine cellars.
But the caves were not opened for that purpose. Their origin was found in medieval times, when the inhabitants of these fortified villages located in borderlands sought protection from the numerous attacks.
As a result, villages such as Laguardia, for example, are so deep in caves that its historic walled center has always been closed to vehicular traffic due to the danger of sinkholes in the roadway.
Laguardia could be visited almost entirely through the subway corridors that make up these cellars. Each house has its own underground cellar, whose measurements are not proportionally related to those of the house to which they belong; thus there are huge houses with small cellars and vice versa.
We will have the chance and honour to have a little walk in one of these cellars. Great!

I wasn't sure about going on a tour in Donosti, it's not my kind of thing, but my wife insisted and boy she was right!
